Dear Friends of Markham Lutheran,
Welcome to our new website! What a blessing modern technology can be.
On Sunday, January 20th, the second Sunday after the Epiphany of Our Lord, the Gospel reading presents what St. John calls the first of Jesus' signs--changing water into wine at the wedding at Cana. Jesus' signs manifest the power and presence of God in Jesus.
Several themes pop out of this lesson: 1) The setting of a wedding feast echoes both the marriage bond between God and Israel (first Lesson Isaiah 62:1-5) and the great messianic banquet at the end of time; 2) Jesus says that, "My hour has not yet come." Jesus' "hour" is the final manifestation of his glory in the passion and crucifixion. (See John 7:30; 8:20; 12:23; 12:27; 13:1; 17:1.); and 3) The essential features of this "sign" are: The failure of the old order of ritual purification and the establishment of the new order of purification through the cross of Christ.
The best wine was yet to be served! It would come at the last Supper with the sharing of the new wine of the Kingdom with the apostles--and with us!
Grace and Peace to you,
